Dr. Wee’s desk is displayed here by-and-large as he had left it in 2005. Valuable items from many stages of Dr. Wee’s life are kept here. One of the earliest items is a special scrapbook:
“On his desk, we have a treasured item from the day that he ran out of the Pasir Panjang House before the Japanese bombed it. He rescued this book – it’s a Useful Badminton Party scrapbook. It contains all the news articles about that party.”
His study area is a reflection of Dr. Wee’s ability to evolve with the times: his treasured Remington typewriter, which he used extensively in his journalism years, is placed opposite his first computer: a ThinkPad laptop. “On the desk, you will see an IBM computer that Eng Hwa purchased for him in 1993 when he left the Istana and he learned on the DOS and struggled through it, but he triumphed in the end.” He spent much time at this desk reaching out to his global network of friends via fax and e-mail.
Dr. Wee’s Presidential stationery set also features prominently on his desk. This silver stationery set was commissioned from London by his daughter, Eng Hwa. The custom- made items are engraved with Dr. Wee’s name, title, and signature.
