Later Years And Legacy
When asked by Lee Kuan Yew how he would adjust to his post-presidential life, Dr. Wee responded, “I was ‘His Excellency for over 10 years in Kuala Lumpur and in Tokyo. I have had no trouble becoming a private citizen again. I do not expect any problems after I cease to be President.” Indeed, Dr. Wee returned to private life without missing a beat. His later years were vibrant, as he continued to engage in volunteerism, regular exercise, family life, and friendship with the many connections he made through the years.
Dr. Wee Kim Wee passed away on 2 May 2005 at the age of 89, following a battle with prostate cancer. His body laid in state at the Istana prior to a simple funeral service, as was his wish. His wife passed away on 7 July 2018 at the age of 102. They were survived by six children, 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and by their legacy of family values, humility, sacrifice, and kindness.
In the words of Lee Kuan Yew, speaking about Dr. Wee on the occasion of his Parliamentary election as President on 30 August 1985: “He recounts his life without pretensions. He was ceaselessly striving, not for high and mighty pursuits, but simply to make a living, to help his family, to share some of the joys of life with his fellowmen.”
