Programme Director’s Message
The CIS’ postgraduate programmes offer unique opportunities for both professional and academic advancement.
Our Master’s in Sustainability aims to cultivate a new breed of sustainability professional that can shape and advance organisational change for the better. Inter-disciplinary by design, it offers a holistic yet focussed sustainability training by offering core courses from each of SMU’s Schools, as well as the opportunity to specialise in one of three designated tracks.
Our MPhil and PhD programmes in Asian Urbanisms aims to cultivate a new breed of urban scholar that tackles the complex issues shaping Asia’s cities. Offering students core supervision from the CIS’ world-renowned faculty, plus the option of secondary supervision from any of SMU’s other Schools, our students are uniquely positioned to redefine urban research.
Whether you’re looking to redefine industry best practices or pioneer new ways of thinking about cities, our postgraduate programmes provide the pathways through which you can launch the next phase of your career.

Postgraduate Research

MPhil & PhD in Asian Urbanisms
Our postgraduate programmes in Asian Urbanisms offer an opportunity to study cities in an inter-disciplinary way. Students are primarily supervised by faculty from the College of Integrative Studies, with optional co-supervision from other SMU Schools, and will undertake coursework and independent research culminating in a dissertation. Graduates explore diverse topics, from changing food consumption to e-commerce economics, waste management, and sea-level rise.
PhD graduates are prepared for academic and policy-related roles, while MPhil graduates gain skills for careers in research, policy, or consulting. With access to expert faculty, our students are well-equipped to address the most pressing urban issues in Asia.
