These lead lettersets were gifted to Ms Wee Eng Hwa by the technician at The Straits Times printing press, where her father took her in the 1960s to show her how newspapers were produced. When The Straits Times was founded in 1845, its eight- page weekly publications were printed using a hand-operated press. Although printing technology has advanced leaps and bounds since the 1800s, through Dr. Wee’s time at the paper, and beyond, these lettersets embody the everlasting importance of the printed word to transmit critical news.
