In a recent commentary published in Channel News Asia, SMU Professor of Science, Technology and Society and principal investigator of Cooling Singapore Winston Chow and lead principal investigator of Cooling Singapore and Director of Singapore-ETH Centre Professor Gerhard Schmitt, wrote, "In a highly built up environment, heat tends to get trapped in materials such as concrete, steel and asphalt, leading to what we call the urban heat island (UHI) effect. But all is not lost. We can adapt and mitigate with science, technology and a common understanding of how cities can be cooler. Research conducted in Singapore previously has produced measurements and models that give us a good idea of what causes the UHI."
